Sören Kottner

Researcher

Sören Kottner is a forensic imaging specialist with over a decade of experience at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Zurich. His work focuses on developing automated imaging solutions and standardizing forensic 3D body documentation.


He specializes in 3D scanning, forensic photography, multispectral imaging, and multi-camera setups. From 2016 to 2025, he served as an engineer and project lead at the Zurich Institute of Forensic Medicine, where he initiated and led the VirtoScan project. As part of this project, he developed and introduced a fully automated 3D whole-body imaging system into the institute’s routine forensic workflow. Prior to that, he worked with the Virtopsy Group and the 3D Centre Zurich, performing forensic reconstruction work for crime and accident investigations.


He holds a Master of Science in Ecology and Evolution, a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He is currently building his own consultancy focused on professional training and advisory services in forensic documentation while pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science.
