Off-Site Mass Casualty Exercise (Tuesday, Feb 24, 2026) — Attendee Information

Overview
As part of the IAFSM/ACSR Crime Scene Reconstruction Conference, attendees will participate in a hands-on, multi-scene mass casualty training exercise focused on both 3D and traditional forensic documentation workflows. The exercise begins with a live-response active shooter simulation that you will observe via live video feeds, followed by rotating skill stations where you will document and analyze scene components. 

 

Location
Flatirons Community Church (Lafayette)

Transportation (Bus)
• 07:15–07:45 AM: Load buses at Embassy Suites Boulder
• 08:00 AM: Buses depart (approximately 25-minute drive) 

 

Morning briefing (required)
08:30–09:30 AM: in the West Auditorium at Flatirons Church. Briefing includes: expectations for the day, safety guidance, rotation process, lunch plan, station map distribution, and a CrimePad demonstration. 

 

Live active shooter response (viewing)
09:30–10:00 AM. You will observe the live exercise via a coordinated feed in the West Auditorium (DFR drone livestream, surveillance system recording, and body-worn camera footage from role players). 

 

Rotations and day schedule
10:00–10:30 AM: Team assembly and transition to first assigned station
10:30–05:00 PM: Twelve 30-minute station rotations (with staggered lunch)
05:00 PM: End of exercise and transport back to the hotel 

 

Teams and flow
Attendees will be assigned to one of 12 rotating teams. Each team moves through 12 stations on a fixed rotation schedule. Please stay with your assigned team to keep the day on time. 

 

Lunch
Lunch is split into two 30-minute blocks to keep rotations moving:
• 11:30–12:00: Teams 1–6 lunch; Teams 7–12 rotate
• 12:00–12:30: Teams 7–12 lunch; Teams 1–6 rotate
Lunch location: Main Lobby Café area at Flatirons Church. Food vendor: Cosmos Pizza. 

 

What you will do at the stations (12 total)
Each station is designed for hands-on exposure to specific documentation, reconstruction, or technology workflows. Station locations are spread across rooms in the facility and two outdoor tented areas. 

1. Drone-Based 3D Mapping (Outdoor Patio)
   Drone flight planning and aerial capture workflows for orthomosaic and 3D reconstruction. 

2. Bloodstain Pattern Analysis — Manual (Lounge)
   Foundational BPA skills using traditional tools (impact angles, area of origin, mechanism). 

3. Bloodstain Pattern Analysis — 3D Documentation (Gym)
   3D scanning and/or photogrammetry workflows for BPA capture and courtroom-ready products. 

4. Trajectory Analysis — Manual (Room 601)
   Trajectory fundamentals using rods/string/visual alignment tools on prepared panels. 

5. Trajectory Analysis — 3D Techniques (Room 602)
   Using 3D data/software to model trajectories and correlate impacts with positions. 

6. CSI360 Technology Showcase (Room 500) 

7. FARO Technology Showcase (Room 400) 

8. RIEGL Technology Showcase (Rooms 201–202) 

9. Leica Technology Showcase (Room 300) 

10. Pix4D Catch (Rooms 101–102)
    Document victim positions (props/mannequins) using handheld LiDAR-based workflows and integrate into a master dataset. 

11. Forensic Lighting — FoxFury (Main Sanctuary staging area)
    Lighting tools and applications for large indoor environments. 

12. Vehicle Trajectory Analysis (East Dock, outdoor tents)
    Document bullet trajectory paths on vehicles (vehicle-focused trajectory documentation). 

Facility map and restricted areas
A station map is provided during the morning briefing, and the operational plan includes a diagram showing station placement and an “Off Limits” area (highlighted on the facility layout). Please follow signage and staff direction onsite. 

 

Safety and conduct expectations
• This is a training exercise with a simulated active shooter response. Follow all instructions during the briefing and throughout the day. 
• Signage will be posted indicating training is in progress; remain within attendee/station areas and do not enter marked restricted spaces. 

 

Recording notice
The scenario will be recorded using the church surveillance system, a DFR drone livestream, and body-worn cameras on law enforcement role players. Recordings support post-event training and conference sessions.
